Re-imagining The GoPro App Experience.

The Goal

GoPro has a clear objective: to revolutionize the way people capture their experiences, allowing them to be fully present and embrace the moment. However, we've noticed that many GoPro users are feeling underwhelmed by the current limitations of the app. They yearn for more creative freedom in capturing and editing their photos and videos, all while enjoying a seamless and straightforward sharing experience.

Overview

After undertaking research through interviewing existing GoPro users, a competitor analysis and a review of online feedback, there were three key issues highlighted with the existing offering:

1. Lack of community engagement: The current app lacks opportunities for users to interact with one another, hindering the formation of a vibrant community.

2. Restrictive nature: Users often feel limited by the current application, craving more flexibility in expressing their creativity.

3. Unfriendly user interface: The app's interface is not as intuitive as we would like, leading to frustration and confusion among users.

With these insights, I proceeded with conceptualizing a design aimed at not only addressing these setbacks but also creating a groundbreaking application that distinguishes itself from competitors and appeals to the millennial audience. Over the course of 12 weeks, I conducted numerous user interviews, synthesized the information gathered, and organized user testing workshops to narrow down the final product design.

Design thinking process

Lack of engagement

My approach was to first better understand the pain points of the existing app and to better understand what current GoPro users enjoyed, disliked and what they would like to see improved. For this project, a large focus was placed on conducting and organizing the research and feedback to guide the prototype development. While it didn’t leave a lot of time for user testing, the information was invaluable to guiding the layout and ultimately, the user experience of the app.

Pains

The existing user experience primarily centers around file transfer, lacking meaningful interaction between users. The proposed design seeks to change that by introducing seamless sharing across various social media platforms, ensuring a familiar and intuitive experience. Users will have the ability to share and post their content, engage with other user profiles through likes and comments, and an integrated social media feed that fosters connections with individuals sharing similar passions.

Improving the free user experience

A separate proposed feature would see the removal of the existing pay barriers that plagues the current user experience. Simple quality of life improvements like this, as well as allowing those without a GoPro camera to be able to utilize app features would create a more inclusive experience and make it a more attractive product.

The Final Design

User feedback played a vital role throughout the entire process. At the end of the 12-week journey, we conducted usability testing, comparing the existing user experience with our proposed improvements. Our goal was to evaluate the differences in user experience while navigating various app functions, assess the appeal and novelty of the app prototype, and utilize the insights gained to refine the final product. This iterative approach ensures continuous enhancement as we progress through the design and development stages.
